❄️ Winter Song was a refreshing and engaging story about guilt, innocence, loyalty, and the ways a small town will protect its secrets. Byron Lugo has been released from prison after serving time for vehicular homicide, but he has maintained from the beginning that he is innocent.
🔍 Although I’ve read other books involving convicted people who insist they didn’t commit the crime, I enjoyed the creative way this story developed. The unexpected revelations involving Byron’s former girlfriend, the witness, and others connected to the case gave the familiar premise its own identity and kept me wondering what had really happened.
🎧 I listened to the audiobook and found it very enjoyable. Jim Meskimen’s narration complemented the story well. The dialogue sounded natural, the story flowed smoothly, and the pacing was handled well. Nothing felt repetitive, confusing, or awkward.
👥 The characters felt believable and fully developed. Their motivations were understandable, their actions suited their personalities, and their relationships developed naturally throughout the story.
👮 Gordon Trent’s perspective as the police chief who helped convict Byron added another compelling layer. As Byron continued fighting to prove his innocence, Gordon was forced to reconsider his judgment, his loyalties, and the decisions he had made during the original investigation.
⚖️ The question of whether Byron was guilty or innocent gave the book both intellectual and emotional depth. Several characters faced difficult moral choices, particularly when loyalty conflicted with doing what was right. Although the story didn’t leave me deeply contemplating its themes after I finished, it offered more than a straightforward mystery.
📖 The story held my attention, and I was eager to discover what had really happened. While I could comfortably pause the audiobook, I remained invested each time I returned to it and ultimately finished it quickly.
🌙 Julie’s Final Verdict
Winter Song was an engaging small-town mystery with believable characters, natural dialogue, and unexpected revelations. I especially enjoyed watching Byron Lugo continue fighting to clear his name while Gordon Trent began reconsidering the investigation, his loyalties, and his own legacy.
The mystery surrounding Byron’s guilt or innocence kept me interested, while the secrets connecting his former girlfriend, the witness, and the other townspeople gave the story additional depth. It was an enjoyable audiobook that held my attention and kept me eager to learn the truth.
Overall, this was a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
