📚 Library of Forbidden Books was a fresh, creative, and thought-provoking story. I read many books involving libraries, but I had never fully considered the lengths people went to in order to save books from being banned and destroyed. This story gave me a deeper appreciation for those who risked so much to preserve literature and protect the knowledge contained within it.
✍️ The writing was strong, polished, and engaging, with several memorable and exceptionally written moments. The story was layered, insightful, and emotionally profound, particularly in its portrayal of Helene Nathan, one of the first female librarians at a prestigious German library.
🔥 As the Nazi regime began banning and burning books, Helene understood the danger and possible consequences of resisting. Despite the risks, she remained determined to protect the forbidden books and keep their stories alive. Her courage, perseverance, and resistance made her a complex and memorable character.
💭 This book explores the power of literature, the importance of preserving history, and the struggles women faced while trying to protect pieces of humanity during a terrifying time. It was both painful and inspiring to consider what Helene and others like her endured.
🕯️ Because of the courage of librarians and other resistance workers, important books, ideas, and stories survived for future generations. Their efforts demonstrated that saving books was about far more than protecting physical objects—it was about defending knowledge, freedom, history, and humanity itself.
🎧 I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. Kathleen Gati’s narration helped bring Helene’s story to life, and I found the book difficult to pause. Although I had to step away from it a few times, I always wanted to return and discover what would happen next.
