🍀 The Diary at the Irish Adoption House was a fresh, creative, and unexpectedly unique story. I quickly fell in love with Sheila and admired the incredible strength she demonstrated throughout everything she endured.
💔 Sheila’s journey was heartbreaking. The circumstances surrounding her relationship with Mickey, her pregnancy, and the decisions others made about her future were horrifying to consider. Her experiences offered a painful look at how few choices women had during that time—especially when their families and society believed they had the right to control their lives.
✍️ The writing was polished and engaging, and the story flowed easily from one chapter to the next. Nothing felt confusing or awkward, and the pacing allowed me to remain emotionally connected to Sheila’s journey.
💭 Sheila’s struggles gave the book tremendous emotional and intellectual depth. The story examined the devastating consequences of decisions made on a woman’s behalf and what it meant to survive after having control of her own future taken away. It was insightful, complex, and emotionally profound.
👩 The characters were memorable and exceptionally well developed, particularly Sheila. Her strength, perseverance, and determination made it easy for me to become invested in her life. I wanted to see her find the freedom and happiness she deserved after everything she had been forced to endure.
📖 Although I could pause the book when necessary, I remained completely invested and finished it within a couple of days. Each time I returned to the story, I wanted to continue reading and discover what would happen to Sheila.
🌙 Julie’s Final Verdict

Michelle Vernal created a compelling story about love, motherhood, survival, and the limited choices available to women during that period. Sheila’s experiences were painful and sometimes horrifying, but they gave the story tremendous depth and made her journey unforgettable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and became deeply invested in Sheila’s life. It was moving, insightful, and difficult to step away from. I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy emotional historical fiction centered on strong and resilient women.
