Currently Reading: Reckoning and It’s Not Her

Halfway through July feels like the perfect time to reset.

I am in the middle of a couple of books right now, which honestly feels very normal for me. As always, I have one book on audio and one book in my hands, and right now both of them have my attention for completely different reasons.

There is something I love about having two different reading experiences going at the same time. One book is there for the quiet moments when I can sit down and actually read, and the other is there for the moments when I want a story in my ears while I am doing everyday things. It gives me a way to stay connected to reading even when my day looks busy or a little scattered.

Right now, my in-my-hands read is Reckoning by Sharon Sala, and my audiobook is It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica.

In My Hands: Reckoning by Sharon Sala

I am currently reading a DRC of Reckoning by Sharon Sala from Edelweiss, and this one caught my attention fast.

This is a fiction, romance, suspense novel that releases on September 15, 2026, and I already know it is going to be one of those books I want to keep making time for. In one reading session, I made it 49% of the way through the book, which says a lot about how quickly it pulled me in.

The story follows Tate Bandy, who was marked as different after warning his classmates about the deadly tornado that destroyed their Ozark school thirty years earlier. His visions saved lives, but they also made the town fear him and label him “the devil’s child.” Tate grows up shunned by the same people who secretly seek out his gift, carrying the weight of knowing things others cannot see.

At the center of his life is Briar Lowe, the girl who never turned away from him. Their connection grows through storms, betrayal, danger, and the prejudice surrounding Tate’s reputation. That mix of love, suspense, and the question of whether his gift is a blessing or a curse is exactly the kind of setup that makes me want to keep reading.

I love when a book does that — when you sit down thinking you will just read a little bit, and suddenly you look up and realize you have made serious progress. That is exactly what happened with this one.

There is something about the combination of romance and suspense that works so well for me when the pacing is right. I like feeling invested in the characters, but I also want that little push of tension that makes me keep turning the pages. So far, Reckoning is giving me that “just one more chapter” feeling, which is always a good sign.

Since this is a DRC, I am still reading with that review mindset in the background, but I am also trying to let myself experience the story naturally first. I want to see where it takes me before I start organizing all of my final thoughts.

Audiobook: It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica

My current audiobook is It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica, which came out on February 3, 2026.

This one is a mystery thriller, and so far it has me wanting to sneak away and listen on my own just so I can finish the audiobook. That is one of my favorite signs that an audio is working for me. When I start looking for extra little pockets of time to listen, I know I am hooked.

Mystery thrillers can be so fun on audio because the tension feels even more immediate. A good narrator, a twisty story, and that constant feeling of needing to know what happens next can make the listening experience feel almost impossible to pause.

That is where I am with this one right now. I want answers. I want to know where the story is going. And I definitely want more listening time.

Why I Like Having One Audio and One Physical Read

Having one audiobook and one physical or digital book going at the same time really works for my reading life.

They each fit into different parts of my day. The book in my hands is for the slower moments — sitting down, getting cozy, and focusing on the page. The audiobook is for movement, errands, chores, or those moments when I want to keep reading but cannot physically hold a book.

I also like that the two formats give me different moods. Right now, Reckoning is giving me that romantic suspense pull, while It’s Not Her is giving me the mystery-thriller urgency. They are different enough that I do not feel like I am mixing them up, but both are strong enough to keep me interested.

That balance is exactly what I want in a currently reading stack.

Where I’m At Today

Today, I feel like I am in a good reading place.

I have one book that completely surprised me with how quickly I flew through the first half, and I have one audiobook that keeps calling me back because I need to know what happens next. That is such a fun spot to be in as a reader.

Sometimes reading check-ins do not need to be complicated. Sometimes it is just:

• Here is what I am reading.
• Here is what is working.
• Here is what has me hooked.
• Here is what I cannot wait to get back to.

And right now, that is exactly where I am.

Final Thoughts

My current reading mood is very much split between suspense and thriller, and I am not mad about it.

Reckoning by Sharon Sala has already pulled me almost halfway through in one sitting, and It’s Not Her by Mary Kubica has me wanting to disappear for a little while so I can keep listening. Both books are holding my attention in their own way, and I am excited to see how they each unfold.

I will definitely have more thoughts once I finish them, but for now, this is my little currently reading check-in: Reckoning in my hands, It’s Not Her on audio, and both making me want more reading time.
